Problem Statement

1.) Interior Design
2.) Problem- Too much clutter in a room. Once I solve the problem, I would be able to continue decorating the room because I've removed the things I don't need.
3.) Problem- Room painted too dark. Once I solve the problem, the room would not look so shrunk together and I would continue to keep on decorating the room.

Working EQ

The Pentagon:
1.) Positive Statement: A positive thing that happened so far is that I got to see firsthand how to put the final pieces together when pitching a project for a potential client as an Interior Designer. While helping out with this last step before actually arriving and proposing the project to a client, I got to see the slideshows they put together and all the pictures they photo shopped so provide a better vision of what they planned. I helped put samples of wallpapers, flooring, and fabrics for pillows and couches, etc. together. This caused me to experience what it feels like to be an interior designer and it allowed me to go through something that every interior designer  has to prepare for.

2.) EQ Content: The piece of research that helped me get a better understanding of my topic was an article I found online at mylittledecorator.com called “So, You Want To Be An Interior Designer?” This article really gave me a big idea of what it means to be an interior designer because it told me that it’s not all about just being creative, but it’s a lot like running a business because you have to also make sure that everything gets done on time, all the bills get paid, clients are satisfied, all the projects get completed on time, and you have to make sure you order any materials you have a low supply of.

3.) What’s worked so far for me in this senior project are the research checks. The research checks get me to do my research and in those moments were we sit in class and do everything, I can find out information from not just my mentor, but from other Interior Designers. It helps me see what their tips are and what works and what doesn’t work for them when they design.

4.) What hasn’t worked so far is the distance between me and my mentor, Rey. Since he’s in LA and I am in Pomona, it’s kind of hard for me to get a ride there and I can’t find anyone closer that would be willing to be my mentor.

Finding Value:
5.)
  • ·       One question that comes regarding my subject of Interior Design is, am I creative enough to be a successful Interior Designer if I want to pursue this as a career?
  • ·         My end goal this year with my senior project is to redesign my room using the techniques I learn about Interior Design.
  • ·         The person I would want to talk to next is someone named Deb. I’ve never met her but I want to talk to her because Rey recommended that I speak with her because she could give me another view of what Interior Design is like for her. In addition, I trust Rey’s judgment so when he recommends someone I know they’re good.

Interview Preperation

1.  Who do you plan to interview?  Why?

I plan on interviewing my mentor Rey III Viquez. I'm interviewing him because he is the only interior designer I am in contact with at the moment. I also feel like Rey would be one of the most influential people I interview because he has his own business, has been an interior designer for years, and I've also gotten to work with him. Rey knows a lot about this topic, and I feel like I could get not just answers, but other information like tips and ideas from him.

2.  You have to ask 5 questions.  What additional questions do you plan to ask?  Ask open-ended questions.

-What do you tell/ask clients when they ask you to design something for them?
-What made you want to become an interior designer?
-What do you focus on first when designing a room?
-What is the hardest part about being an interior designer for you?
-What do you like most about being an interior designer?

Topic Choice

A.  My topic is Interior Design. I chose this topic because I really want to remodel my room and I feel like doing Interior Design as my senior topic would really push me to get started. I also feel like this is a topic I would be able to apply for as long as I have a place to call home.

B.
  • Effective Learner:  I plan to be creative in all of my work. This will help me be an effective learner because it would cause me to think outside the box.
  • Effective Communicator: I plan on being able to tell others about my topic. This will help me be an effective communicator by being able to pass on the knowledge I have about Interior Design.

  • Effective User of Technology: I plan to be able to complete all my blogging tasks. This will help me be an effective user of technology by demonstrating what I learned about my topic to others.

  • Effective I-Poly Citizen: I plan to be able to serve others just as I someday might be serving my clients. This will help me be an effective I-Poly citizen by helping others when they are in need.

Mentorship Log

What questions were raised because of the 10 hours of experience?  List them.
What process does Rey go through when planning a layout for a room?
What kind of tools does Rey use to draw out rooms on a paper?
If you come up with your own furniture designs, where do you get them made?

What is the most important thing you gained from this experience? Why?
The most important thing I gained from this experience was to be fearless in trying new things. This was important because exposing yourself to new things such as places and designs will inspire you and can help spark up your creativity. Being an interior designer always causes you to try new things for your clients. A client may have a crazy idea, and as an Interior Designer, you can help turn their dream into the reality  they call home.

How did what you did help you choose a topic?  Please explain.
I wasn't sure if I would be fascinated by the topic, but when I met Rey and the whole team, I decided this was something I wanted to do for my whole senior year. Rey was really nice and after just one day became one of my favorite people in the world. He knows so much about this topic and I love that he's not holding back on teaching me anything about it. He was really excited about the topic and all his excitement got passed down to me. I realized that even if this is not a career I want to pursue, it's something I could use for the rest of my life because this experience won't just have me call a place home, but make it feel like one too.
