It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas..
Getting into the Christmas spirit here at Rey 3. I got to help decorate all around the office, and put up the Christmas tree today.
Some Rey3 Up in the Magazine
Finally got my hands on the ALEGRIA magazine where the place I do my mentorship was featured in. It looks fabulous.
" Talking to Rey 3, one of the most diverse design and architectural firms in Los Angeles, I was impressed by their vibrant designs with Latin Flair and tremendous international appeal ." -taken straight out of page 47.

Blog 10: Senior Project Update
(1) What are you currently doing in your independent component?
I just recently got rid of most of my Aunt's stuff in the patio, and it is ready to be decorated. Before you decorate, you need to come up with themes, ideas, and draw out your plans. I just took photographs of my patio to draw the changes that I want to make.
(2) What is a recent piece of research (article, interview, or audio-visual) that have you reviewed you would say was significant in helping you understand where to go next in your senior project? The piece of research should be something you reviewed in November. Please explain what you learned and where are you going next because of this piece of research.
My most recent piece of research that helped me understand where to go next in my senior project, is a blurb called, Creating a Decorating Plan. This research piece gave me ideas and steps I should complete now that the patio is ready to get worked on. It gave me tips on how to display my ideas in an organized manner.
(3) Provide evidence from your independent component or the piece of research as something you recently did. For example, a photo of something you working on for your independent component or your notes from the video you watched.
This is my patio. I took this photo after my Aunt's stuff was moved out. She was moving and gave us loads of her things, and this patio was earlier filled with her washer machine, dryer, refrigerator and boxes of her belongings. Now it is ready to get worked on!

Blog 5b: Science Fair Proposal
1. What is your topic?
Interior Design
2. What is the driving problem behind your experiment and the quote by an expert to support that problem?
What is most important in redecorating a residential bedroom?
"Making sure the client is comfortable. Bedrooms are the last thing you experience before you go to sleep so it controls a lot. It’s not like a dining room where you just go in there to eat. It’s sort of the last thing you do, and it can control how well you sleep. For example, there’s a difference between sleeping in a crappy old house and a sleeping like a baby in a luxury hotel."
-Andrew Clark, Third Interview
3. What is your hypothesis?
If the cost of a hotel in the Inland Empire is $100 per night, then it would have neutral colors in the room.
4. Write a paragraph summary of how you will perform the experiment. Include the tools you plan on using.
I will go to 22 hotels, with a color palette of neutral color samples. I will walk into the rooms of these hotels and compare the colors on the palette to the colors in the room to see if they match.
5. Select one of the following Project Categories for your experiment:

Blog 7: Independent Component 1 Plan Approval
(1) Write a description
of what you plan on doing for your independent study component.
My brother bought a new house and wanted to touch up and paint the walls so I'll be helping them do that. I will also be designing a patio.
My brother bought a new house and wanted to touch up and paint the walls so I'll be helping them do that. I will also be designing a patio.
(2) Describe in detail
how you think your plan will meet the 30 hours work requirement.
I plan on meeting my 30 hours by making sketches of what the patio could look like. I will then show those sketches to my mentor, Rey, and he will
give me feedback on it. When the sketches are complete, I will start putting the patio together. This includes painting, going out and looking for furniture, and then
putting all the pieces together.
(3) How does your independent
study component relate to your working EQ?
My EQ is, “What is most essential in designing a room?” and
the best way to figure out the answer to this is to go through the process of designing a room. I’ll try to take the same steps interior
designers make when they have to decorate, and that would help me get the same experience they go through. I
would even have my parents be my “clients” where I would
have to get things approved by them and make sure they like all the sketches.

(From left to right: Me, Andrew, Rey, Louis, Lorrie)
I learned a lot about the place and people I work with the day we had this photo shoot. I've come to know that Rey 3 Design Collaborative is not just another interior design business, but it is unique in the way where personality, heart, and soul are poured into every single design. They've got passion in what they do and their designs show it. They are talented, but even with all the talent they've been gifted with, things don't come easy. There has been tears (It's been noted that Lorrie made Rey cry once), struggles, and hardships in getting all the final pieces put into place. The people at Rey 3 Design lift each other up and together help figure out what carpet would go best with the dark wood floors and red walls. They've got so much passion for what they do and they wouldn't trade all those hardships in to do anything else, because even through all the stress in making sure the right walls get painted and the bills get paid, they're doing what they love and that's what makes them happy. Most importantly, they can be themselves when they work, and they work together.
"Five years from now you might not even choose to be an interior designer, but no matter what you decide to do, make sure you be yourself when you do it" -Rey

Problem Statement
1.) Interior Design
2.) Problem- Too much clutter in a room.
Once I solve the problem, I would be able to continue decorating the room because I've removed the things I don't need.
3.) Problem- Room painted too dark.
Once I solve the problem, the room would not look so shrunk together and I would continue to keep on decorating the room.
Working EQ
The Pentagon:
1.) Positive
Statement: A positive thing that happened so far is that I got to see firsthand
how to put the final pieces together when pitching a project for a potential
client as an Interior Designer. While helping out with this last step before actually
arriving and proposing the project to a client, I got to see the slideshows
they put together and all the pictures they photo shopped so provide a better
vision of what they planned. I helped put samples of wallpapers, flooring, and fabrics
for pillows and couches, etc. together. This caused me to experience what it
feels like to be an interior designer and it allowed me to go through something
that every interior designer has to
prepare for.
2.) EQ Content: The piece of research that helped me get a
better understanding of my topic was an article I found online at
mylittledecorator.com called “So, You Want To Be An Interior Designer?” This
article really gave me a big idea of what it means to be an interior designer
because it told me that it’s not all about just being creative, but it’s a lot
like running a business because you have to also make sure that everything gets
done on time, all the bills get paid, clients are satisfied, all the projects
get completed on time, and you have to make sure you order any materials you
have a low supply of.
3.) What’s worked
so far for me in this senior project are the research checks. The research
checks get me to do my research and in those moments were we sit in class and
do everything, I can find out information from not just my mentor, but from
other Interior Designers. It helps me see what their tips are and what works
and what doesn’t work for them when they design.
4.) What hasn’t
worked so far is the distance between me and my mentor, Rey. Since he’s in LA
and I am in Pomona, it’s kind of hard for me to get a ride there and I can’t
find anyone closer that would be willing to be my mentor.
Finding Value:
5.)
- · One question that comes regarding my subject of Interior Design is, am I creative enough to be a successful Interior Designer if I want to pursue this as a career?
- · My end goal this year with my senior project is to redesign my room using the techniques I learn about Interior Design.
- · The person I would want to talk to next is someone named Deb. I’ve never met her but I want to talk to her because Rey recommended that I speak with her because she could give me another view of what Interior Design is like for her. In addition, I trust Rey’s judgment so when he recommends someone I know they’re good.

Interview Preperation
1. Who do you plan to interview? Why?
I plan on interviewing my mentor Rey III Viquez. I'm interviewing him because he is the only interior designer I am in contact with at the moment. I also feel like Rey would be one of the most influential people I interview because he has his own business, has been an interior designer for years, and I've also gotten to work with him. Rey knows a lot about this topic, and I feel like I could get not just answers, but other information like tips and ideas from him.
2. You have to ask 5 questions. What additional questions do you plan to ask? Ask open-ended questions.
-What do you tell/ask clients when they ask you to design something for them?
-What made you want to become an interior designer?
-What do you focus on first when designing a room?
-What is the hardest part about being an interior designer for you?
-What do you like most about being an interior designer?

Topic Choice
A. My topic is Interior Design. I chose this topic because I really want to remodel my room and I feel like doing Interior Design as my senior topic would really push me to get started. I also feel like this is a topic I would be able to apply for as long as I have a place to call home.
B.
B.
- Effective Learner: I plan to be creative in all of my work. This will help me be an effective learner because it would cause me to think outside the box.
- Effective Communicator: I plan on being able to tell others about my topic. This will help me be an effective communicator by being able to pass on the knowledge I have about Interior Design.
- Effective User of Technology: I plan to be able to complete all my blogging tasks. This will help me be an effective user of technology by demonstrating what I learned about my topic to others.
- Effective I-Poly Citizen: I plan to be able to serve others just as I someday might be serving my clients. This will help me be an effective I-Poly citizen by helping others when they are in need.

Blog 1: Summer Mentorship Component
Mentor: Rey III Viquez

rviquez@mac.com
www.rey3.com
Mentorship Log
What questions were raised because of the 10 hours of experience? List them.
What process does Rey go through when planning a layout for a room?
What kind of tools does Rey use to draw out rooms on a paper?
If you come up with your own furniture designs, where do you get them made?
The most important thing I gained from this experience was to be fearless in trying new things. This was important because exposing yourself to new things such as places and designs will inspire you and can help spark up your creativity. Being an interior designer always causes you to try new things for your clients. A client may have a crazy idea, and as an Interior Designer, you can help turn their dream into the reality they call home.
How did what you did help you choose a topic? Please explain.
I wasn't sure if I would be fascinated by the topic, but when I met Rey and the whole team, I decided this was something I wanted to do for my whole senior year. Rey was really nice and after just one day became one of my favorite people in the world. He knows so much about this topic and I love that he's not holding back on teaching me anything about it. He was really excited about the topic and all his excitement got passed down to me. I realized that even if this is not a career I want to pursue, it's something I could use for the rest of my life because this experience won't just have me call a place home, but make it feel like one too.
